My Joy

Lights are on at 6 a.m.

They’re up building Legos again.

Mess of forts in the living room,

chasing the dog and shouting "kaboom."
Laughing so hard they can't even breathe

at the end of the day.

Someday soon they’ll be grown and flown,

and I’ll be sitting in this quiet home,

waiting for the phone to ring just to hear,
"Hey, how was your day?”

Someday soon they’ll walk out that door—

no more Legos on my floor.
And I’ll be wondering if I did enough

to make them feel my love.

Snacks in hand, then off they dart,

laser tag with fearless hearts.
Messy hair and smelly feet—

just kids who never miss a beat.

And man, their room looks like a bomb went off

by the end of the day.

Someday soon they’ll be grown and flown,

out there standing on their own,

and I’ll be waiting here at home

with the porch light on.

Someday soon they’ll walk out the door—

no more Legos on my floor.
Tires rolling down the drive,
and my heart will swell with pride.

Sweaty hands, wide bright eyes,

jokes and riddles all the time,

cards spread out, new movies queued—

inseparable, those two.

And—“Hey Mom, we need a snack!”

for the millionth time today.

But someday soon they’ll be grown and flown,
finding their way through the great unknown.

All I know is they’ve got a shot,

if they keep it up like this.

Someday soon they’ll walk out the door.

No more house with little boys.

But I'll still be I’ll be grinning ear to ear

'cause those two are my joy.

Yeah those two little boys...

—good God, they are my joy.
